ANNOUNCEMENTS/NEWS
Questions For Mike Clancy We posed questions to candidates for the Arlington County Board and as we receive responses, we will post them on our site. And don't forget to vote March 11! (Mike Clancy responses)
Congratulations to Mary Hogan, 2002 Otto Award winner! Mary has worked hard for years on behalf of canines and their companions across the area -- both personally and professionally through the efforts of her dog bakery and boutique on Lee Highway (Dogma). Hogan has advocated for the care and placement of homeless animals, for maintenance of dog parks, and she has worked to educate dog owners about canine welfare, training, and good citizenship. The Otto Award is named for the late canine companion of ArlingtonDogs’ founder, Judy Green. The award is given each year to the person who has demonstrated outstanding public service on behalf of people and dogs in the County. An awards ceremony for this award will take place during the ADogs annual meeting in April. (Date and place are being finalized). Thanks to all ADoggers who submitted nominations for this 3rd annual Otto Award.
Arlington County's Parks and Recreation Commission notified ArlingtonDogs that it is recommending that ADogs' proposal for erosion mitigation at Glen Carlyn CCA be funded at almost the full level ADogs requested. The proposal will be before the County Board on February 22. This proposal, which seeks to contain erosion that is occurring throughout Four Mile Run watershed and which includes both rock (rip-rap) placement and replanting efforts, was the only small parks grant proposal this year that dealt with water quality. Thank you to everyone who signed the petitions, worked for Civic Association approval, and volunteered to match funds -- more details will be forthcoming about progress on the project, matching fund efforts, and volunteer opportunities as planting and other mitigation activities begin.
Eastern Veterinary Blood Bank is looking for a few good dogs to sign up to be blood donors. Dogs have to be available to donate blood four to six times a year, and once we get a critical mass (15 dogs or more) they will be able to come out to Arlington and do a blood drive. This is a great cause -- most blood that is used for operations ends up coming from veterinarians' own dogs. If interested in signing up your dog, please contact ArlingtonDogs@hotmail.com.
The annual St. Patrick's Day Fun Dog Show will be held in Market Square, Old Town Alexandria, from 11 am to 12:30 pm, on Saturday, March 8. Your dog can compete in categories such as longest tail, most mysterious heritage, largest ears, dog/owner look alike, best Irish dog costume, and more! There will also be a raffle to benefit Animal Welfare League of Alexandria (Hydrant Dog Barkery & Boutique is donating a one-year supply of dog treats), and shelter dogs will be available for adoption. Contact customers@hydrantdog.com. with questions about this event or about their new store.
Any ADoggers interested in volunteering their dogs to do pet therapy at the Carlin? We are trying to gauge interest to see if the program should be resurrected. An ADogger has received numerous phone calls from the Carlin, including one from the social director -- the residents are eager to see us return! Contact ArlingtonDogs@hotmail.com.
if you are interested.
Happy Tails Yappy Hour and Silent Auction will take place Saturday, February 22, from 4 to 6:30 pm at Paws Pet Boutique and Before & After Stores (home furnishings and accessories) at 54 and 50 Maryland Avenue, Annapolis. Proceeds will benefit Best Friends Animal Sanctuary. Questions? contact lmnkownacki@erols.com.
No More Homeless Pets DC member organization, Humane Society of Loudoun County, is planning a community event May 4th for which they hope to have an agility demo. If you are interested in showcasing your pet's agility talents and can bring and set up a few agility obstacles, please contact event@nmhpdc.org.
February 25 is Spay Day, an event initiated by the Doris Day Animal Foundation to raise public awareness of the companion animal overpopulation problem, promote spay/neuter surgery as a primary means of addressing this overpopulation, and to inspire Americans to take personal responsibility for preventing the births of surplus litters by sponsoring the spaying or neutering of at least one companion animal or feral cat. More information is available at www.ddaf.org/spayday.
Virginia Delegate John M. O'Bannon III (R-Henrico County/City of Richmond) has introduced a bill (HB 1865) which increases the penalty for abandoning or dumping a companion animal in any city -- raising the penalty from a Class 3 to a Class 1 misdemeanor. Interested ADoggers can contact their delegates to urge passage of this bill; contact info for Delegates is at http://dela.state.va.us/dela/MemBios.nsf/MWebsiteEL?OpenView
Three items of note for Arlingtonians: The Northern Virginia Conservation Trust has received funding from the Chesapeake Bay Small Watersheds Grants Program to offer 10 grants of $500 each as incentives to homeowners, schools, and businesses located in the Four Mile Run watershed to assist in making their properties more watershed friendly. Mike Nardolilli can answer questions at 703-354-5093. Also on a watershed note, Arlington County's Water Pollution Control plant Master Plan is being updated and public hearings will take place on February 25 (7-9 pm at Arlington Central Library), February 26 (9:30 am - 2:30 pm, Arlington County Courthouse Room 311; also from 7-9 pm that night at Aurora Hills Library), and February 27 (9:30 am to 1:30 pm, Gunston Community Center). Anyone who attends might want to remember ADogs' efforts to improve the watershed through the Small Parks Grants program -- and feel free to speak up! Any questions, contact ArlingtonDogs@hotmail.com. Finally Arlington County's public forum to help shape the county's Urban Forest Master Plan will take place on February 20, from 6:30 - 9:30 pm at Central Library. This forum will be a place to discuss vision and concerns that citizens have for the future of Arlington's Urban Forest. Questions or to RSVP, please contact trees@co.arlington.va.us.
Reminder: ArlingtonDogs' annual meetings take place in April. This year's is tentatively scheduled for April 12 -- details about time and place will be announced. Anyone interested in serving on the ADogs Board or interested in raising specific items of concern should feel free to contact arlingtondogs@hotmail.com. Keep your eyes open for final date/time/place, and we hope to see you there!
