RELOCATION UPDATE – JUNE 26, 2004

-- COUNTY BOARD APPROVES RELOCATION TO "YELLOW" SITE --

At its meeting on June 26, the Arlington County Board voted 4-to-1 (Board Member Paul Ferguson opposing) to accept the Task Force report and authorize the County Manager to begin detailed site design for relocation of the CCA to the Madison Yellow site. Please be sure to send a thank you note to those County Board members who voted to support the fine work of the Task Force! (see updates below for contact information).

There was great turnout at the meeting from friends of the Madison CCA, many of whom were among the 36 speakers making presentations to the Board.

THANKS to everyone who participated in the process that led to this decision -- it is clear that the Board considered the many letters, e-mails, and phone calls they received and most of them did the right thing by supporting the work of the Task Force.

It is expected that County Staff will next move to a detailed design phase for the Madison Yellow site. As always, staff will consider input from all interested parties, including users and neighbors. The Board instructed the staff to be particularly attentive to design elements such as parking and set-back/buffer.

We will continue to post updates on the relocation as things progress. Again, THANK YOU to all that attended meetings, provided input, and lent a helping hand. We have reached a very important milestone toward achieving a "new and improved" Madison CCA.

See www.geocities.com/madisondogs for updates.

COUNTDOWN!

Countdown to the County Board Meeting: 5 Days until the Arlington County Board Public Hearing on the Madison Dog Park relocation on Saturday, June 26th

Have you written to the County Board to support the Madison Task Force recommendation? Its study over the past several months resulted in a consensus recommendation that the Madison dog park should remain at Madison COMMUNITY Center, but off the historic land. This is good news for the many Arlingtonians who have visited the Madison dog park since it was established in the mid-1980's.

Have you kept your day open for the County Board meeting on Saturday? (We’ll have an approximate time estimate later this week--watch this website!)

The Hearing on the Dog Park will be item 26 on the agenda on Saturday. As soon as we know the approximate time, we will notify members via e-mail and posting on the web and at the park.

For the Task Force and County Manager’s Report on the matter, please see the links at Item 26: http://www.co.arlington.va.us/cbo/meetings/2004/jun/0626/index.htm

Arlington Prepares!

"ARLINGTON PREPARES" kicks off THIS SATURDAY (June 5), and ADogs needs volunteers to help the County distribute information to every resident regarding what to do in case of an emergency. This is a wonderful project and time is running out to sign up! If you can join other ArlingtonDogs members distributing information, e-mail ADogs board member Maureen Farrell: m_p_farrell@yahoo.com.

Come one, come all to the Arlington County Fair!

As usual, ArlingtonDogs will have a booth (E8) at the Arlington County Fair at the Thomas Jefferson Community Center, and we are beginning to set a schedule for volunteers willing to staff it.

It's a lot of fun to meet and greet your fellow Arlingtonians, and spread the word about the importance of dog parks in our community. This year, the Fair will be held from 6 pm Thursday, Aug. 19 through Sunday afternoon, Aug. 22.

Please contact ADogs co-chair Judy Green at jajgreen@worldnet.att.net to sign up for a couple of hours! It's fun!

Arlington County Seeking Volunteers!

ADogs encourages you to get involved in our community by volunteering for a County Commission or advisory group. Take your pick and apply! There are 50 of them!

A list of the advisory groups can be found, along with an application form at http://www.co.arlington.va.us/cbo/groups. Or you can contact the County Board office directly at (703) 228-3130.
