This message comes from the Arlington Red Cross to all directors and volunteer coordinators of agencies Arlington. Please help us circulate:

Dear Disaster Volunteers,

A special thanks to those of you who responded to yesterday's email regarding availability. I truly appreciate the flexibility you have shown in accommodating Red Cross needs over the Labor Day Weekend. That said, we are still looking for volunteers.

Hurricane Frances will reach landfall within the next 24 hours and we urgently need your help. Frances is massive in size and slow moving. It has the potential to drop a tremendous amount or rain and cause monumental damage to eastern Florida. Please help us insure that we have the capacity to respond quickly and efficiently to needs as they arrive.

At a local level, we need volunteers to staff the National Response Center of the American Red Cross. The response center, located in Falls Church, is the primary point of contact for those affected by disaster anywhere in the U.S. It is also the place that family members call when they are searching for relatives who live in impacted areas. Hurricane Charley & 'Frances' has created a great need for additional volunteers to field calls from clients in Florida, the Carolinas and elsewhere.

We are asking that volunteers commit to a minimum of four-hours during one of the Center's two shifts (7am to 3:30 pm and 3 pm to 11:30 pm.) Volunteers will be needed for three weeks or more to assist with the needs created by Frances. If interested in volunteering, I encourage you to attend the scheduledvolunteer training at 1:30 PM on Sunday, September 5, 2004.

The training consists of a brief overview/history of the Center and the hands-on softwareapplications they use. Volunteers need to possess experience navigating the web, sending and receiving e-mails, and entering information in a database. The Red Cross will provide the additional tools necessary for use when interviewing clients to determine their immediate emergency needs. The Response Center is located at 8111 Gatehouse Road (5th floor) in Falls Church.

If you are interested in assisting the Red Cross in their response-- or have questions about this opportunity -- please send an e-mail to Sally Hairfield (hairfields@usa.redcross.org) or call her at 703-206-6829 to reserve a spot in one of the training sessions.

On a National Level, the Red Cross has an IMMEDIATE need for 1000 volunteers to travel to our Atlanta, Georgia Staging Area. We are asking thatvolunteers make a three-week commitment. Volunteers will assist families displaced by Hurricane Frances. Previous Red Cross training is NOT required. Volunteers will be needed for all functions, especially: MassCare for sheltering, feeding and ERV deployment; Family Services. Your local American Red Cross will provide orientation and training before deployment. Costs to cover transportation, meals and lodging will be paid by the American Red Cross. This will be a hardship assignment. Please contact Traci Winfree: WinfreeT@usa.redcross.org with your availability.

For more information on hardships, please see below. A hardship assignment may include the following: H1 Water Disruption ? water needs to be boiled in certain areas H2 Power Outage ? widespread power outage effects those with medicalequipment, physical limitations, etc H4 Weather Extremes ? Heat H5 Housing Shortage ? staff are being housed in shelters H6 Working Conditions ? heat, humidity and a lack of air conditioning inhousing and worksites H9 Travel Distances ? lengthy commute times between service delivery sitesand staff lodging, as well as traffic hazards.

The impacted areas have missing or damaged street signs and many traffic signals are not working. Staff may be commuting 60-90 minutes between work sites and lodging, or40-50 miles. Please, if you are at a place in life where you are able to make a three-week commitment, consider responding as a Red Cross volunteer in the aftermath of Frances.

Thank you, Kate
