ANNOUNCEMENTS/NEWS

GET OUT THE VOTE!

On Tuesday night (February 1st), the Arlington County Civic Federation (ACCF) will be voting on a resolution that was put forward by the Old Glebe Civic Association (OGCA). On the face of it, this resolution appears to have nothing to do with you or your dogs as it demands that the county board follow all county regulations, guidelines, and operating memoranda or explain to the public why it’s not doing so. However, if passed, this resolution will be used by the OGCA as part of their continuing effort to close the Fort Ethan Allen Community Canine Area (CCA). (Here is a link to the resolution: http://www.civfed.org/resdogre.htm)

As you probably know, certain members of the OGCA have been trying for years to close this CCA by every means—fair or foul. Hundreds of hours have been spent by county staff and the public in finding a place to re-site the CCA and the county board has already approved the re-siting and the design of this area. Passing this resolution could undo all the hard work of these people.

Member organizations of the ACCF have up to 8 representatives (4 delegates and 4 alternates) but a TOTAL OF 4 VOTES.

Please find out which civic associations and/or groups you belong to are members of the ACCF by going to http://www.civfed.org/members.htm. Then contact those member organizations and urge them to vote AGAINST this resolution on Tuesday night. The meeting begins at 7:30pm, but the resolution will probably be discussed around 9pm.

Arlington County DPRCR News Release!

Concerns at Towers Park Community Canine Area

Several concerns have been raised recently regarding the Community Canine Area (CCA) located at Towers Park. Following is an update from Arlington County regarding these concerns, and what the County is doing in response.

Alleged Dog Poisoning: The County has received several inquiries regarding the alleged poisoning of dogs at the CCA located at Towers Park. The Arlington County Police Department (ACPD) has received one report of a potential poisoning, and is investigating that incident. In addition, police officers and park rangers are performing extra checks on the CCA.

Until more is known about these allegations, CCA patrons should check the area before letting their dogs off leash. The Towers Park Community has posted warning signs at the CCA.

Anyone with first-hand knowledge or physical evidence related to these allegations should call the ACPD non-emergency number at 703-558-2222.

Noise Complaints: In the past few months, ACPD received several calls regarding excessive dog barking noise in the CCA. ACPD investigated these complaints, and the noise levels did not constitute violations of the County noise ordinance.

Noise complaints about barking dogs between the hours of 7:00 a.m. and 7:00 p.m. should be reported to the Animal Welfare League of Arlington at 703-931-9241. At all other times, contact the ACPD non-emergency number (703-558-2222).

Park Hours: The CCA located at Towers Park closes one-half hour after sunset, as do all other County parks without installed lighting. However, some patrons had been using the CCA after closing in the spill-over light from the nearby tennis courts. In response to complaints that the CCA was being used after hours, the County posted signs to clarify park hours.

Community processes will begin in the coming months to consider lighting at several CCAs, including the one at Towers Park.

Currently there is one lighted CCA in Arlington located at Benjamin Banneker Park (1701 North Van Buren St., near the East Falls Church Metro). The lighted CCA is open until 8:00 p.m.

The “Towers Park Community,” the sponsoring organization of the CCA located at Towers Park, will hold a meeting at the CCA on Monday, January 10, at 7:00 p.m. Representatives from the Department of Parks, Recreation and Cultural Resources and ACPD will be on hand to answer questions.
