Arlington County has released a new press release entitled:

Arlington Releases Draft of Public Spaces Master Plan

Forums scheduled to get public feedback

ARLINGTON, Va. - Arlington County has released a draft of its updated Public Spaces Master Plan and scheduled three public forums - May 4, 5 and 21 - to get residents' feedback. Locations and times are listed below.

Recommendations in the draft plan are organized around four guiding themes: expansion, optimizing use of public spaces, connectivity and accessibility. During the collaborative planning process undertaken by staff and residents to update the plan, the theme of "Where the Community Comes Together" emerged. An executive summary and the full plan are available online at www.arlingtonva.us.

Forums to answer questions from residents and to gather public input will be held:

- Wednesday, May 4, 7:30 - 9:30 p.m. at the Central Library Auditorium, 1015 N. Quincy St.

- Thursday, May 5, 7:30 - 9:30 p.m. at the Aurora Hills Community Center, 735 S. 18th St.

- Saturday, May 21 - 10 a.m. noon at the Fairlington Community Center, Room 10, 3308 S. Stafford St.

The public is invited to submit comments no later than May 27, either at one of the forums, online at www.arlingtonva.us, by e-mail to prcr@arlingtonva.us or in writing to: PSMP c/o PRCR, 2100 Clarendon Blvd., Suite 414, Arlington, Va. 22201.

Background

The draft Public Spaces Master Plan (PSMP) updates the 1994 Open Space Master Plan, which is an element of Arlington's Comprehensive Plan. Developed in conjunction with the Park and Recreation Commission and the Open Space Master Plan Task Force, it is designed to guide decision making for Arlington's public spaces including administration, funding, operations, maintenance and capital projects.

Since 2001, there has been an extensive community process that has included several community forums, numerous Open Space Master Plan Task Force meetings, as well as smaller working group meetings that delved into six specific focus areas. Additionally, two mail/telephone surveys were administered as part of this effort: a household recreation survey in 2002 and a youth recreation survey in 2003.

Additional information about the Public Spaces Master Plan is available at www.arlingtonva.us. The draft plan is available for review at all Arlington Public Libraries. If you would like a copy of the draft and/or the executive summary by mail, or have questions about the plan, please call County staff at (703) 228-3322.
