September 17, 2001 - Press Release ARLINGTON ASKS FOR COORDINATION OF VOLUNTEER ASSISTANCE AND FOOD DONATIONS Area residents have shown an overwhelming and generous response to the events of the last week especially in making offers for food and volunteer assistance. The County now has an enormous list of people and resources from which to pull as needed. In addition, County officials request that residents refrain from bringing home-prepared food to Arlington fire stations as regular food supplies have been established. "I am extremely proud of the outpouring of assistance we have received from the public over the last few days. However, this operation will continue for a number of days still, and it is increasingly important for us to be able to phase in support when and where it is needed," said Arlington County Board Chairman Jay Fisette. The County welcomes additional offers of assistance and organizations and individuals are encouraged strongly to contact the County's Information and Referral line at 703-228-3000 and register. There also are other opportunities for residents to express their desire to help out including checking with their neighbors to see if they need help or paying special attention to children to see if they need extra reassurance during this time. Other ways to provide assistance are: Give blood: Call 1-800-Give Life or 1-888-Blood-88 to schedule appointments. Blood donation sites will be available in Arlington and around Northern Virginia.
